Ömer Durmaz

Ömer Durmaz is a communication designer and an academician who works as a lecturer in the Department of Graphic Design at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Fine Arts, where he specializes in visual communication culture, graphic design history, design management, and archives.

In 2004, he founded and managed ambalajtasarimi.com, an online platform focused on packaging design, until 2006. From 2006 to 2009, he served as the editor-in-chief of the "Grafik Tasarım" (Graphic Design) magazine, which he co-founded. In 2010, he conducted research on "Istanbul's 100 Graphic Designers and Illustrators," and the findings were published. During the same year, he co-founded the Tasa Platform collective, which organized "design walks" events. He was also one of the founders of the Turkish Typography Society in 2010.

His master's thesis on packaging design was published in 2015 as part of the Academic Publication Series of the Packaging Manufacturers Association. Besides his academic work, Ömer Durmaz curated several exhibitions in the field of design history, such as "Cover Artists of Babıali," "Firuz Aşkın at 90," "Symbols of Sait Maden," "Speaking to the Eyes: Visualizing Knowledge from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic," "Artists of the Fair: Traces of Graphic Design in the History of Izmir Fair," "Ah Brother: Thessaloniki Izmir," and "History of Refinement: Gülten Akın."

He has been involved in various events and publications as a member of the scientific board, including the Packaging Congress, İmece: Art and Design Symposium, International Student Triennial, UTAK National Design Research Conference, 4T: Design and Design History Society Symposium, and "Art-e Sanat" magazine. Ömer Durmaz has also served on the management board of GMK: Graphic Designers Professional Organization and 4T: Design and Design History Society, where he was one of the co-founders. He is a member of the editorial board of the "Toplumsal Tarih" (Social History) magazine.
