Tarık Tolunay

Tarık Tolunay was born in Istanbul in 1970. He gained recognition as a cartoonist from the last generation of Oğuz Aral's Gırgır magazine in 1989. Tolunay worked for humor magazines and newspapers, and for many years, he created storyboards, illustrations, and animations in the advertising industry.

In the early 2000s, he started translating his accumulated visual world of the city he lived in into illustrative city maps called "Fractal Istanbul." The Fractal Istanbul project was introduced in 2017 under the title "Historic Peninsula," including the historical and symbolic regions of the city. Due to the positive reception of this work, in 2019, he presented a project called "Haydarpaşa Panorama," focusing on Haydarpaşa Railway Station and its surroundings. In 2020, he published another map titled "Fractal Istanbul-Pandemic," which covered Eminönü, Historic Galata Bridge, and Karaköy.

Tarık Tolunay's works reflect a unique approach that combines miniature art, engraved city maps, and contemporary game visuals. These works are considered a visual contribution to the urban culture. Besides addressing urban issues, Tolunay also takes part as a "Courtroom Cartoonist" in historical trials such as the Cumhuriyet Newspaper, NuSe Case, and Gezi Park Case, documenting these processes with his drawings.

As one of the pioneers of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) in Türkiye, Tarık Tolunay continues to work as an "Urban Drawer" He aims to adapt the Fractal Istanbul project to new platforms and focus on becoming Istanbul's visual production workshop.
